Editions

NECLive 1 (2013)

Nigerian Entertainment Conference Live (NecLive) debuted April 2013 at Landmark Hotel, Lagos. The theme for this edition was "Building the future of our dreams", with panel discussions and speeches on "Are Record Label Endangered Species", by the founder of Kennis Music, Keke Ogungbe, "Relationship between Corporate Nigeria and Entertainment: Parasitism or Symbiosis" by Kola Oyeyemi and the "Role of the Media in Developing the Industry of Our Dreams" delivered by Chris Ubosi. Nigerian comedian Tee A was the first host and has been the host for seven editions of NECLive[5] with over three thousand participants and an estimated ten million audience watching live on television and internet live streaming.[6]

Director General of Nigerian Economic Summit Group Frank Nweke delivered the inaugural speech of NECLive.[7] Veteran Nollywood actress and broadcaster, Amaka Igwe[8][9][10] who gave a speech titled "The Nollywood Paradigm - Reflections From an Unapologetic Commercial Nollywood Filmmaker" left a classic advise for the Nigerian creative industry: “The industry should use the power and skills inherent to promote and project modern and historical documentation, education and preservation of cultures in Nigeria. The industry has the potential of shaping a positive image for Nigeria. ‘What we are putting out is what the world thinks about Nigeria”.[11]

NECLive 2 (2014)

Discussions and idea sharing at NecLive 2 centered on "Creating the Pathway to the Future" and “Solving The Distribution Problem Once And For All" delivered by Pat Utomi, a professor of Political Economy.[12] Speakers and panelists were popular comedian BasketMouth, Gbenga George, Obi Asika, Aina Kusoro.

But a Gospel artist Lara George quote that reflects the theme of NecLive 2 and underscores piracy activities in the Nigeria entertainment industry was termed classic: “I spend months in the studio record, you take my music and distribute it whatever way you do and take 80% of the profits. The middle man between will take another 50% from the remaining 20% and leave me with almost nothing. That has to stop, we need a law that will stipulate the percentages these middle men get“.[13]

NECLive 3 (2015)

NecLive 3 focused discussions on “Buying and Selling Nigerian Entertainment…And Everything In Between”, "The Future of Music and Fans (The Science of Tracking and Monetizing Airplay)", and "How to Sell Nigerian Contents" It held April 22 at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. Popular musicians MI Abaga, Davido, Bez Idakula, Wunmi Obe, and Nollywood actresses Kemi Lala-Akindoju and Ini Edo were speakers and panelists.[14]

NECLive 4 (2016)

The theme of NecLive 4 was “Entertainment Industry As ‘Last Hope’ For Africa’s Largest Economy", with discussions centered on how entertainment and creative industry could contribute to the growth of Nigeria economy as an alternative to oil.[16]  Nigeria was at the time in its first deep economic recession in decades resulting from low oil prices in the international market, low demand and production cut back at home due to the agitations in the Niger Delta.[17][18][19] Nigeria government shifted attention to creative industry that contributes billions of dollars to the economy annually as part of its diversification efforts from oil.

Lead organiser Ayeni Adekunle had said the speakers at NECLive 4 were selected based on their personal experiences and success stories to prove to the world how entertainment and creative industry could be harnessed to drive a non-oil economy. Multiple award-winning R&B superstar Banky W, popular muscian D'banj, dancer, Kaffy, West African Idols winner and singer Timi Dakolo, multi-talented viral entertainer Falz, fast-rising singer Simi, Project fame winner, Praize, and Adekunle Gold and Lil' Kesh were the speakers and panelists at NecLive 4 held April 26,2016 in Lagos.[20][21]

Mavin Records superstar Tiwa Savage was the lead speaker at NECLive 5, the first female in such a lead role at NECLive.[24][25]

There were two memorable quotes at NECLive 5 from two popular comedians:[26] "There’s a very thin line between being funny and being offensive. Value proposition is the only thing that can turn your talents into cash” Alibaba.

"Talent is the only resource that does not run dry, you can't take your culture to the western world, (but) you can only take your originality” Basketmouth.
