NEC Nijmegen (Nijmegen Eendracht Combinatie), commonly known as NEC, is a professional football club based in Nijmegen, Netherlands. The club competes in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football.
NEC has reached the final of the KNVB Cup five times – in 1973, 1983, 1994, 2000 and 2024 – but has never won the trophy.
History
Early years
The club originated from a merger in 1910 between Eendracht (founded in 1900) and NVV Nijmegen. Initially formed by working-class players, NEC grew steadily and eventually reached the top tier of Dutch football.
Professional era
NEC became a professional club in 1954 but faced financial struggles, starting in the Tweede Divisie. By the 1960s, municipal support helped NEC rise to the Eredivisie, where they enjoyed several successful seasons.
Cup finals and Europe
NEC reached the KNVB Cup final five times and played in European competitions, including the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1983 and the UEFA Cup in 2003 and 2008.
Stadium
NEC plays at Goffertstadion, opened in 1939 and renovated in the late 1990s. It currently holds 12,650 spectators.
Rivalries
NEC’s main rival is SBV Vitesse, with matches between the two known as the Gelderse Derby. Games against De Graafschap are considered the Kleine Gelderse Derby.
