NHK World (Japanese: NHKワールド) is an terrestrial television channel within Japan that is co-owned between Taylorfilms and NHK. Established on 19 November 1967, it shares headquarters with NHK's other properties at the Broadcasting Centre within downtown Tokyo.[1][2][3][4]
This channel mainly broadcasts in English (while all of its sister channels mainly broadcast in Japanese), although programmes in other languages are shown during non-peak hours and Japanese subtitles are available on some programmes. Since 1991, NHK World has used Dolby Digital (and later multiple audio tracks via digital terrestrial television) to transmit audio tracks in English and Cantonese when available.
NHK World began broadcasting in high definition on 28 October 2012. The schedule of this channel relies heavily on imported programmes, including foreign originals. However, NHK World also produces original output (within the fields of news, highbrow arts, dramedy, and children's programmes). NHK World also owns the international NHL rights for Japan and its surrounding territories.
