Gabriela Geneva (born April 25, 1993), known as NIIVA, is a Bulgarian-born Canadian singer and songwriter. She released her self-titled debut EP on October 30, 2020.[1][2] She notably co-wrote the record-breaking debut single “Black Mamba” for K-POP girl group aespa, released in November 2020.[3][4][5]

Career[edit]

NIIVA grew up and lived in Bulgaria, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Although she consistently participated in performance groups from a young age, she did not begin actively pursuing a career in music until after she and her family settled on Canada's West Coast in 2007.

While attending high school in Port Moody, British Columbia, she joined a pop-punk band called GreenTree[6] as a songwriter and as one of three lead singers. The band independently released their EP “Back When They Were Good”[7] in 2012, and supported the release with a tour of Western Canada.

The group disbanded in 2014 and NIIVA began pursuing a solo career under her real name Gabriela Geneva. Her early releases secured her opening spots for fellow Canadian artist Ria Mae at the Red River Ex in Winnipeg, Manitoba[8] in June 2016, as well as Shawn Hook at the Queen City Ex in Regina, Saskatchewan[9] in August 2016. That same year, Canadian Beats named Gabriela Geneva as one of the Best Up & Coming Artist of 2016 in their Year In Review.[10]

After relocating to Toronto, Ontario in the summer of 2017 NIIVA began collaborating with a number of Canadian and American producers and songwriters such as The Fourth Floor, Rob Wells and Shobha (Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber), Sammy G & Bobby Brass from Kuya Productions (Alessia Cara, Meghan Trainor), Jimmy Harry (Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears), Alex 'Pilz' Vujic (Tyler Shaw, Mia Martina), Matt Beckley (Camilla Cabello, Avril Lavigne). NIIVA signed a US publishing deal with Warner Chappell/VLVTTree[11] and continued to write not only for herself but for other artists as well. In early 2020 she adopted her current stage name “NIIVA”. She worked most prominently with Sammy G and Bobby Brass from Kuya Productions. Together they shaped the sound of NIIVA's debut self-titled EP which was released in October 2020 and featured 7 tracks, with “Love Games” garnering the most attention. The music video for "Love Games" was directed by Dan LeMoyne[12] and produced by Mad Ruk Entertainment.[13] NIIVA's debut EP release peaked at #20 on the iTunes Pop Canada chart[14]

In November 2020, K-pop giant SM Entertainment debuted their new girl group aespa- the label's first girl group in 7 years - with their debut single “Black Mamba”, which NIIVA co-wrote with Ella Isaacson and OMEGA, the original 3 songwriters for the song. The track also features NIIVA's background vocals.[15]
