While each of the above are valuable benefits to the members of the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association, the most important is the people. Our District Vice Presidents, Kyle Hughes, Tim Duetsch and Mike Feaster, are readily available to assist our members across the state. Secretary Chris Esposito enables information to be easily disseminated to the membership through a continuously updated and modernized database. With $250 in dues from each member, Treasurer Troy Powell manages a budget of $1.3 million, ensuring that the organization is in compliance with State agencies, as well as the IRS. In addition, Treasurer Powell helps Locals with initial set up, educates on current practices, and assists in the event of IRS revocation. Executive Vice President Wayne Wolk, also the Labor Chair, brings decades of experience, having been involved in the drafting and negotiation of hundreds of contracts. President Ed Donnelly is more than the face of the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association, he is the heart, the driving force behind our mission to protect, educate, and represent first responders and their work conditions, pensions and health benefits. Our unprecedented relationships with the Governor, legislators, and policy and decision makers, have allowed President Donnelly to be instrumental in the passage of monumental legislation, including S-5 Pension Carve Out, Fire/EMS Lifeline, COVID-19 Presumption, and the Bill Ricci World Trade Center bills. However, it is you, each and every one, that makes up the soul of the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association, you, who get up every morning ready to give it all for the citizens of the communities we serve.

Mission statement

It is the mission of the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association to represent, protect, and educate the Firefighters, EMTs, and Dispatchers throughout the State of New Jersey through representation at the local, state, and federal level. To advocate on the public’s behalf for legislation that protects both our citizens’ and first responders’ safety. To protect and maintain the health benefits, pensions, staffing, and any other benefit negotiated for our members through collective bargaining. This Mission Statement was adopted by a majority vote of the NJ FMBA Executive Delegates at the 123rd Annual Convention on September 17, 2019.

History

On Saturday, December 11, 1897, firefighters from six New Jersey communities gathered for the first Convention of the Firemens Mutual Benevolent Association of New Jersey. The Branches, now called Locals, represented were from Jersey City, Paterson, Hoboken, Newark, Camden, and Trenton. They discussed many issues faced by firefighters, including Pensions and Legislation. The Pension Law of 1896 was of great concern, and one of the first committees formed was the Legislative Committee. The Committee was tasked to act as they saw fit to block passage of any bill that may be “a detriment to the Firemen of this State”. As in the past, Pension Reform and Legislation are still a priority, as the now named New Jersey

Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association continues to fight for the rights, safety and well- being of the membership and first responders across New Jersey.

The NJ FMBA has grown from the original six Branches to 119 Locals, representing thousands of firefighters, EMTs and dispatchers.
