NOTON (Archiv für Ton und Nichtton)[1] is a German independent record label founded in Berlin in 1994 by visual artist and musician (Carsten Nicolai), also known as (Alva Noto)[2]. The imprint became active in 1996 with the release of the record “Spin” under Carsten Nicolai's "noto" alias[3]. In the same year the collaboration with Rastermusik, the label founded by Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider[4], begun and by 1999 the two labels merged into Raster-Noton[5].
In 2017, the two labels split back into distinct entities, with NOTON starting work independently and releasing the back catalogue of Alva Noto's solo and collaborative albums and EPs [6]. Musical projects include collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto[7], Ryoji Ikeda (cyclo)[8], Blixa Bargeld, Mika Vainio[9], Anne-James Chaton (ALPHABET)[10].
