NZS 4541 Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems is a New Zealand technical standard maintained by Standards New Zealand. It specifically covers the design, installation, maintenance, performance, pressurization and reliability of all automatic fire sprinkler systems for buildings and structures. [1][2]
Sprinkler systems are a method of fire suppression, where water from the mains supply remains reliable. The first system was installed in the Northern Roller Mills Company building on Fort Street in Auckland, after its construction in 1888. The current revision of this standard is NZS 4541:2020, published in May 2020.
Installation
Residential
Also covered by NZS 4515 [3] and NZS 4517 [4].
In domestic houses, apartment complexes, hotels, retirement homes and other residential occupancies, sprinkler systems help reduce the vulnerability of occupants and property within a dwelling. Residential systems usually have control valves fitted inside an outdoor cabinet.
Commercial
Commercial systems covered by NZS 4541 are typically found in retail stores, schools, colleges, libraries, hospitals, warehouses, factories, and other commercial environments. Commercial properties that use sprinkler systems can have a standby generator for electric and diesel pumps for optional monitoring.
