NZ Autocar is a New Zealand automotive magazine published monthly by Auto Media Group. The first issue was first published in 1996. It is the oldest and longest-running new car publication in New Zealand. Current staff include Kyle Cassidy, Richard Edwards, Andrew Sluys, and Alex Schultz.
History
The first issue of NZ Autocar appeared in 1996; however, the magazine's history can be traced back further. NZ Autocar was born from an amalgamation of the Autonews and NZ Car magazine titles. NZ Car was first published in 1986, edited by Donn Anderson, while Autonews was created by Mark Petch and Allan Dick in 1992. Allan Dick would leave Autonews in 1994 to start NZ Driver magazine.[1]
In 2007, publisher Mark Petch sold NZ Autocar to Fairfax NZ.[2] Fairfax purchased rival publication, Driver magazine, in 2010 and merged Driver with NZ Autocar.[3] In 2016, Petch bought NZ Autocar back from Fairfax NZ, along with business partner, Gavin Shaw. [4]
In 2024, NZ Autocar magazine was sold to Richard Edwards and became part of Auto Media Group, which also owns Autotalk, EVs and beyond, and Transport talk.[5]
In 2025, Autocar entered a partnership with Auto Trader providing news and reviews to the online marketplace and classified advertising business.[6]
