Nadera Sweiss Sawaqed is a tenured Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Section of Rheumatology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Illinois at Chicago. She has a secondary appointment in the Section of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Sawaqed is a world leading authority on sarcoidosis.

There are no FDA-approved therapies for sarcoidosis, and clinical trials are lacking. Pulmonary sarcoidosis is the main cause of death in sarcoidosis, and hence there is an urgent need for safe and effective therapies. Because TNF plays a role in sarcoidosis, Nadera hypothesized that TNF inhibition might be effective in patients with refractory sarcoidosis. Therefore, she acted as the rheumatology site PI for sites in the US and Europe for a multicenter randomized double-blind placebo controlled phase 2 study of the TNF inhibitor, infliximab, in pulmonary sarcoidosis. While TNF inhibition is safe and effective in refractory sarcoidosis, some patients don’t respond to TNF inhibitors. Therefore, she also studied other biologic therapies such as rituximab, a CD20 B-cell-depleting agent. Given the lack of clinical trial data available to guide physicians in managing various aspects of sarcoidosis, she worked on filling the gap by reviewing published data and using her own experience to create a number of guidelines in reviews and textbooks and she published several algorithms, in sarcoidosis. She has published more than 160 papers in refereed journals with more than 2800 citations..[1].

US actor Bernie Mac is a prominant victim of sarcoidosis, a disease that involves abnormal collections of inflammatory cells (granular) that form nodules and can infect several organs in the human body like the lungs and respiratory system. Bernie Mac died in 2008 at the age of 51 years old.[2] and in his honor the Bernie Mac STAR Center for Sarcoidosis Research was established at the University of Illinois at Chicago.[3]. Nadera Sweiss Sawaqed, was chosen to be the founding director of that center[4].

Professor Nadera Sweiss Sawaqed, who is an American physician from Jordanian origin specialized in sarcoidosis was chosen to be the director of the center. In 2012, Professor Sweiss was selected as one of the top 10 doctors in her field on the national level, and also one of Castle Connolly's top doctors for 2012, and awarded a certificates in that regard.[5]. On the international arena, Nadera was selected by the royal court of King Abdullah II of Jordan to serve among a small group of american physicians from Jordanian origin as advisers for the king on health care issues [6]

Nadera and her research team[7] played an important role in treating those who are infected with sarcoidosis, and conducts medical research in the hope of finding a cure for the disease that ravaged every year the lives of tens of thousands of people. Here in this reference, Prof. Sweiss and her REACH for the STARS Town were receiving a $250,000.00 grant in a Hall Meeting held in Chicago in 2014. As she worked at the Faculty of Medicine of University of Illinois at Chicago, she trained, supervised, and served as a mentor for hundreds of students from all parts of the world. This allowed her to connect with medical schools and the medical community and to contribute to the development and growth of many programs. Most distinguished was her connections with the medical community in Jordan and taking part in the exams of students in their senior year at med schools.

In this context, Nadera participated with a small group of scientific leaders in America in a national conference aimed at setting the guidelines for treating sarcoisosis. The conference was organized by the US Department of Health in Washington to put the necessary policies and guidelines for treating sarcoidosis. In raising the public awareness of sarcoidosis and raising fund to support research, Fox News channel in Chicago, hosted a show where Prof. Nadera and Ms. Rhonda, the wife of the late Bernie Mac were the guests to talk about the disease and to launch donations to support research campaign[8] aimed at finding a cure for this incurable disease, and fired on the campaign name "to wear purple" (Wear Purple) because of the color of the Icon brings hope to the souls.
