Nae’Qwan Tommy Nicholas Tomlin (born December 19, 2000) is an American college basketball player for the Kansas State Wildcats of the Big 12 Conference.
Early life and basketball career[edit]
Tomlin grew up in Harlem, New York and attended The Urban Assembly School for Applied Math and Science. However, he did not play basketball for the school and had never played organized basketball prior to that.[1][2] He grew up playing basketball in the parks and on the playground in New York City but never for an organized team. In the middle of high school, Tomlin grew to 6 ft 7 in. (2.01 m). He attempted to play in his senior year of high school but was deemed academically ineligible due to poor grades.
College career[edit]
Monroe Community College[edit]
Tomlin enrolled in Monroe Community College in 2019 and was redshirted during his one year in the junior college located in Rochester.
Chipola College[edit]
The following year, Tomlin transferred to Chipola College in Marianna, Florida. He would play under former Southern Miss and Tennessee coach Donnie Tyndall for two years. In his first year, Tomlin averaged 11 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game. The following year, as a junior, Tomlin would go on to average 13.8 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game.[3]
Kansas State[edit]
On May 2, 2022, Tomlin committed to Kansas State through his Instagram. He was recruited through first-year head coach Jerome Tang and assistant coach Jareem Dowling. Tomlin met with Tang and reportedly shared an emotional connection when sharing his story.[2] On November 7th, 2022, Tomlin would score 14 points along with 8 rebounds in a win against UT Rio Grande Valley in his first ever Division 1 collegiate basketball game. Tomlin would start all 36 games for Kansas State. He helped turn around a team that had won 14 games the previous season to winning 26 games. Tomlin finished the year averaging 10.4 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game.[4] On April 25th, 2023, Tomlin was amongst the 242 early candidates to enter the 2023 NBA draft. He would maintain his college eligibility.[5] On May 31st, 2023, Tomlin withdrew from the draft and announced his return to Kansas State.[6]
Personal life[edit]
Tomlin grew up in Harlem, New York. He is the son of Aisha Ishmael, who holds Trinidadian roots.[2] He has two siblings, Nyeem and Nalyna.[1]
