Nafaa Haddou is an Algerian Canadian technology entrepreneur based in Edmonton, Alberta. He is the co-founder and chief executive officer of FireSafe AI, a wildfire detection and risk management company, and the co-founder and chief executive officer of NuTerra Labs, an artificial intelligence and geospatial technology firm.[1][2]
Early life and education
Haddou was born in Algeria and immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1995. He grew up in Calgary and Chestermere, Alberta. As a youth he joined the 3125 Calgary Highlanders Royal Canadian Army Cadets corps in Chestermere, where he rose to the position of Regimental Sergeant Major and completed the Canadian Armed Forces Basic Parachutist Course in 2008.[citation needed] He graduated from MacEwan University in Edmonton in 2016.[3]
Career
Nu Terra Labs
Haddou founded Nu Terra Labs in Edmonton in 2021 with his brother, Ismail Haddou. The company develops artificial intelligence products for businesses, with a focus on climate related applications including geospatial and environmental solutions.[2][3]
FireSafe AI
In 2023, Haddou co-founded FireSafe AI with his brother, Ismail Haddou.[1][4] The company was established after the 2021 Algeria wildfires, which devestated the region of Larbaa Nath Irathen in the brothers' home country, including close family friends. The disaster prompted the brothers to apply artificial intelligence to cameras, satellite and drone imagery to detect wildfire patterns.[5]
Based in Edmonton, FireSafe AI builds hardware led wildfire detection and risk management systems combining AI powered risk analytics, camera based monitoring units, drone surveillance, and real time dashboards for governments, utilities, and industry.[1][6] Under Haddou's leadership, the company launched pilot programs in high risk regions of Western Canada, including the Municipal District of Bighorn near Calgary, and formed a strategic partnership with RescAlert Inc. to expand into the United States, including California, Texas, and the Appalachian states.[6]
The company has collaborated with fellow Edmonton startups Wyvern, a hyperspectral satellite imaging company, and AIRmarket, a drone fleet management firm, on an integrated approach to wildfire prevention, detection, and response.[7]
In 2025, Haddou returned to MacEwan University to launch a work integrated learning collaboration in which students earn academic credit helping FireSafe AI address wildfire management in Alberta, as part of the university's Griffin Challenge pilot program.[3][8]
Recognition
FireSafe AI was named one of ten companies to watch at Edmonton Startup Week.[9]
