Nafla
Choi Nicholas (born February 28, 1992 in Pasadena, California), better known by his stage name nafla, is a South Korean rapper under the record label MKIT RAIN and member of the 42Crew. He won the rap competition and television series Show Me the Money 777 in 2018.
Life and Career[edit]
In 2014 he joined the USA-based, underground hip-hop crew 42Crew, and in 2015 released his Mixtape This and That. In the same year nafla released the single Wu and gained more attention in the hip-hop scene. In this year a second single was also released, entitled Locked And Loaded, featuring Owen Ovadoz, with whom he met through Soundcloud and became friend after. Both singles have an old school boom-bap style. The same year with his mixtape This ans That nafla won The Best Mixtape of the Year 2015 Award, and Best Mixtape Performance of the Year 2015 Award from Hiphop LE.
In 2016 with fellow rappers Loopy and Bloo he moved to South Korea and created the record label MKIT RAIN. Later Owen Ovadoz and a member of 42Crew, Young West, joined the label.[1]
In October 2017 he released his first LP entitled Angels with 16 tracks, including three skits.
In 2018 nafla joined the television series and rap competition Show Me the Money (in Season 7 entitled Show Me The Money 777) and won the first place. His friend and member of MKIT RAIN Loopy got 2nd place. Their appearance in the show brought a lot of attention to them and their label and he got to perform on the South Korean musica award show MAMA[2]. In 2019 together with Loopy they released a collaborativ mini album entitled LooFla with title songs Atlantis and Shot.
Artristry[edit]
Nafla's rapping style is diverse, however, he often uses old school boom-bap beats. For example, his mixtape This and That, which one made him more recognised, has a more aggressive vibe, however, nafla often has a more laid back style. On the tracks Mercy or Venom we can experience a more new, energetic style, while songs like Love me or Smile show more musicality and r&b vibes. His lyricses diverse as well, some of them are more aggresive and general, others show off his sensible side. The themes include general themes like the hip-hop life and flexing, while other songs speak about feelings of loneliness, love, about the struggles he had, etc. As his most listened rapper nafla chose Kendrick Lamar[3], but other rappers, like The Notorious B.I.G., Big L, 2pac or Korean rapper Gaeko from Dynamic Duo have strongly influenced him as well.[4]
As nafla explained in an interview in radio show Cultwo Show, his stage name "nafla" was invented by a friend of him, rapper, singer niahn, when nafla was trying to find himself a stage name. They were drinking soda drinks, and on one of them it was written "100% natural flavor". From this two words niahn composed the word nafla and suggested as a stage name.
