Nairobi City County is one of the 47 counties of Kenya. It was established in 2013 after the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, replacing the former Nairobi Province. Nairobi is both a county and the capital city of Kenya, making it unique as the country’s political, administrative, economic, and cultural hub.
History
Nairobi was founded in 1899 as a railway depot on the Uganda Railway. It grew rapidly to become the capital of the British East Africa Protectorate in 1907. After Kenya’s independence in 1963, Nairobi became the capital of the Republic of Kenya. With the 2010 Constitution, Nairobi Province was replaced by Nairobi City County in 2013.
Geography
Nairobi City County covers an area of approximately 696 km². It is located in the south-central part of Kenya and lies at an altitude of about 1,795 metres (5,889 ft).
Demographics
According to the 2019 Kenya Population and Housing Census, Nairobi City County had a population of 4,397,073 people, making it the most populous county in Kenya. The population is highly diverse, representing many ethnic and cultural groups from across the country.
Government and politics
Nairobi City County is governed by a devolved county government headed by a Governor. The county has 17 sub-counties which correspond to the electoral constituencies. The County Assembly of Nairobi serves as the legislative body, with elected Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).

Economy
Nairobi is the economic hub of Kenya and East Africa. It hosts the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), the headquarters of major banks, industries, and multinational corporations.
