Nanashi (ナナシ, lit. anonymous), also written using goroawase as 774, is the pen name of a Japanese manga artist.[1] Since 2017, Nanashi has serialized Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro on Kodansha's Magazine Pocket website.

Biography[edit]

Upbringing[edit]

Nanashi had liked comics since he was young, but was not allowed by his parents to read them. Nanashi was prohibited from reading particularly "violent works", but in junior high school, Nanashi read Yuzo Takada's 3×3 Eyes and was fascinated by its content.[2] The work is listed as one of his favorite works of the author, and it influenced Nanashi to the extent that it inspired Nanashi to draw manga. Nanashi doesn't remember exactly when he set out to become a manga artist, but since Nanashi used to draw manga on manuscript paper in high school, Nanashi said, "I may have been conscious of becoming a manga artist.”.[3]

Nanashi publishes his works on Pixiv and is currently serializing Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro, a series about a teasing high school girl and a weak senior boy which was published on Pixiv, gained popularity, and began serialization on Kodansha's Magazine Pocket website from November 7, 2017. An anime television series adaptation was broadcast in April 2021.[3]

Personal life[edit]

Manga production[edit]

In manga production, first of all, "plot creation such as rough synopsis" is done. Plot locations are "nearby family restaurants and food courts". According to Nanashi, he does not work at home so as to reduce slack and nervousness. Next, the editorial department "makes a name that drops it into a frame'' before drawing. The process that takes the most time is the making of the title, which "will reduce the amount of time that can be spent on drawing".[3]

As of 2019, Nanashi has no "plans to set up a studio" as the digital environment allows to work with remote assistants.[3]

Thoughts on comics[edit]

For Nanashi, manga is a "plaything". Game production is a group work, but Nanashi thinks that manga is "a very interesting work" because "it is something that can be completed by one person" and "that is why you can put everything you have into it".[3]
