Kunming Nancheng Mosque (Chinese: 南城清真寺; pinyin: Nánchéng Qīngzhēn Sì) is a historic mosque located in the Wuhua District of Kunming, Yunnan, China. It has been an important center of Islamic faith and education in Yunnan for several centuries.
History
The Nancheng Mosque is believed to have been originally built during the Tang Dynasty.[1][2]
It underwent several periods of damage and reconstruction during later dynasties, including major restoration under the Qing dynasty.[3]
The current structure was completed in a major renovation project in 1996.[3]
Architecture
The mosque combines traditional Chinese and Islamic architectural features, with rooflines and decorative elements resembling those of classical Buddhist temples.[3]
After its most recent reconstruction, the complex covers approximately 22,557 sq.m and includes prayer halls, study rooms, and administrative offices.[4]
A small Islamic printing press operates within the mosque courtyard, preserving and publishing religious texts.[5]
Cultural significance
Over the last century, the mosque has been a major cultural and religious institution for the Muslim community of Kunming and wider Yunnan.[5]
It has long been associated with Islamic education and with Mingde Middle School, one of Yunnan’s earliest ethnic minority schools.[4]
In 1915, Halal Monthly (《清真月刊》), considered the first Islamic magazine in China, was founded here.[6]
