Nancy Manes Plum
Nancy Manes Plum (1932–2019) was an American craft potter and ceramicist.
Early Life
Born and raised in Providence, RI, Plum attended Antioch College.[1] She was introduced to ceramics at Black Mountain College in the summer of 1953 by Peter Voulkos, Warren MacKenzie and Daniel Rhodes.
Education
Plum went on to earn an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, [2] where she studied with Marguerite Wildenhain, Maija Grotell, and Toshiko Takaezu.
Professional Career
From 1958 to 1960, she was an Assistant Professor of Art (ceramics and weaving) at New Mexico Highlands University, and, in 1960, returned to Michigan to join her husband, the painter Jens Plum, Professor of Art at Michigan State University. From 1970 through the early 2000s, Nancy Plum was an active member of the Great Lansing Potters Guild.[3]
Artistic Career
Plum's refined functional style is reminiscent of New England and Japanese pottery.[4][5]Plum’s ceramics are part of permanent collections at the Detroit Institute of Arts [6] [7] [8] and the Mills College Art Museum. [9]
