Nancy Tasman Brower

Nancy Gram (Tasman) Brower is a former teacher, coach, and athletic director. Brower launched the girls' lacrosse programs at four New Jersey secondary schools: The Peck School, Newark Academy, Madison High School,[1] and Morristown-Beard School.[2] She also co-founded the Noe Pond Club with her husband, Bailey Brower, Jr.[3] The member-owned, family swim club has served the Chatham Township, New Jersey community since 1955. Brower runs the swimming programs at the club as Noe Pond's Aquatics Director.[4]

Early life and education[edit]

Brower was born in 1929, and she grew up in South Orange, New Jersey. Brower graduated from the Beard School (now Morristown-Beard School) in 1947. She later served on the Board of Trustees of Morristown-Beard School and the Peck School. Brower also served on Morristown-Beard School's Alumni Board and its Athletic Hall of Fame Committee. In 1989, Morristown-Beard School elected her to their Athletic Hall of Fame. Ten years later, the school awarded Brower their Distinguished Alumni Award.[2]

After her high school graduation, Brower studied at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York and played on the women's lacrosse, field hockey, and women's basketball teams. She graduated from Vassar College with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1951.[5]

Secondary school athletics[edit]

After applying for a job as a fourth grade teacher, the Peck School hired Brower as their girls' athletic director in 1947. She served in that role for 11 years until giving birth to her first child in May 1958. Returning to the school in 1960, Brower coached the girls' lacrosse team for 24 years (1960-1984).[5] She then worked at Newark Academy, Madison High School, and Morristown-Beard School.

Youth tennis in New Jersey[edit]

Brower and her husband, Bailey Brower, Jr., served on the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Youth Tennis Association. The association named their Nancy T. Brower Sportsmanship Award after her in 1994. The Brower Award annually recognizes girls tennis players who demonstrate fair play and commitment to sportsmanship.[6]

Volunteer work with the Junior League and the American Red Cross[edit]

Brower has volunteered with the Morristown chapter of the Junior League, a civic leadership and service organization, for more than 40 years. The league awarded her their Volunteer of the Year Award in 2000. Brower has also volunteered extensive with the American Red Cross. She served on the Board of Trustees of the Southeast Morris Chapter of the American Red Cross. Brower and her husband have taught Red Cross courses on lifeguarding, CPR, and first aid. They have also volunteered for the Red Cross's Lifeline program that monitors senior citizens who have homes equipped with emergency communication devices.[7] In 2008, the Colonial Crossroads chapter of the American Red Cross honored the long-time service of Brower and her husband at an evening reception.[8]

Marionette Players[edit]

In 1968, Brower helped found the Marionette Players,[7] a local theater group that annually organizes shows at the Morris Museum in Morris Township, New Jersey. She has since directed many of the group's performances. As of 2008, Brower has continually attended all performances of the Marionette Players annually since its founding.[9]

Family[edit]

Nancy Brower and her husband have four children. Three of their daughters (Kris, Kim, and Karin) played lacrosse in college. Kris Brower launched the girls lacrosse program at Lawrenceville School in Lawrence Township, New Jersey and then worked as a coach at Stuart Country Day School in Princeton, New Jersey.[1]

After playing on the U.S. women's national lacrosse team, Karin Brower Corbett coached at Rutgers University, Villanova University, William & Mary College, and Drew University.[1] In 1999, the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia named her the head coach of their women's lacrosse team. Corbett guided the 2007 Penn Quakers team to the school's first Final Four birth in 2007. She then led the 2008 and 2009 teams to the Final Four; the 2008 team reached the National Championship game. The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and Inside Lacrosse, a media affiliate of ESPN, awarded Corbett their National Coach of the Year Award in 2007. The following year, IWLCA awarded her their Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year Award.[10]
