Nancy and Randall Faber

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Nancy and Randall Faber are American pianists,  composers, and music educators who created a piano teaching method called Piano Adventures. Nancy Faber is also a flutist. In addition to Piano Adventures, the Fabers publish many books of piano-teaching material, including arrangements of show tunes, pop songs, classics, editions of standard piano repertoire, and an updated version of Hanon exercises. The method and other Faber publications have been translated into eight languages.

Early Life[edit]

Nancy Trithart Faber was born in Jackson, Tennessee in 1955. She studied both performance and composition at the Eastman School of Music, then went on to get a Bachelor Degree in Composition from Michigan State University, and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Music Composition from the Milton Avery Graduate School of Fine Arts at Bard College.

Randall Scott Faber was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1954. He received both a Bachelor and Masters Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan, a Masters Degree in Instructional Design from the University of Michigan, and a PhD in Education and Human Development from Vanderbilt University.

Nancy Faber began lessons at age 3 with her mother, an independent piano teacher who taught the Pace Music for Piano Method. Randall Faber’s grandmother was a classical pianist who gave up performing when she married. He began piano study at age 8 with Lucille Dinsmore. During his teenage years he was also a member of a rock band. The Fabers met in 1977 at a Robert Pace piano workshop in Ann Arbor, Michigan where Randall Faber taught Pace group piano.[1]

Features of the Faber Method[edit]

The Faber method grew out of advancements in piano pedagogy started in the 1950s and 1960s, namely The Music Tree by Frances Clark and Music for Piano by Robert Pace. Piano Adventures combines elements of these methods with a unique combination of  Middle-C, intervallic, and multi-key approaches. The method begins with off-staff reading, and playing across the entire keyboard on all black keys. Notes in the Middle-C position are introduced in groups, but the student plays in these positions on white keys across the keyboard. The complete method incorporates attention to intervals, five-finger positions, music theory, and creativity in an inter-organized progression, supported by corresponding books. The series includes music originally-composed by Nancy and Randall Faber. It also includes well-known folk, pop, and classical melodies.

The Faber Philosophy[edit]

The core of the Faber teaching philosophy is that music instruction "develops the minds and hearts" of the learner. This holistic approach values music performance not only as personal and creative expression, but also as a process of cognitive and emotional development.
