NanoLund

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

NanoLund, formerly known as nanometer Structure Consortium (nMC), is an interdisciplinary organisation at Lund University which supports and coordinates ventures in nano science. As the centre for nano science at Lund University, the organisation engages more than 30 research teams and 400 researchers from the faculties of engineering, natural sciences and medicine as well as the nearby research facilities MAX IV and ESS. It is a strategic research field financed by the Swedish state and Sweden’s first research milieu for nano science and technology[1].

The goal of NanoLund is to apply nano science in such a way as to satisfy crucial needs of society. For example, to solve issues within energy supplies[2], transistor technology[3] or medicine[4]. To overcome these challenges, material science is studied in combination with fundamental research on nano structures’ physical and chemical properties. Various applications of nano structures are studied, such as energy conversion, electronics and life science. The results are regularly published in both popular science articles[5] and science journals[6]

nMC was established in 1988[7] by Lars Samuelson, professor of physics at Lund university. The consortium played a crucial role in the creation of the engineering program in engineering nanoscience (M.Sc.Eng) in 2003. Four years later, in 2007, the Lund Nano Lab, a clean room lab owned by nMC, was inaugurated. It has also played a significant role in fostering the creation and growth of nano technology companies in Skåne County as shown by a survey ordered by the Scania Regional Council[8]. In 2015, nMC changed its name to the current NanoLund.

Organisation

NanoLund is governed by a board possessing overall responsibility for the centre. The board is charged with deciding memberships, distribution of resources and defining strategy and priorities[9]. A managers group is tasked with the daily coordination and long term planning. Moreover, every research and resource area has a coordinator and a vice coordinator. Together they have responsibility for the coordination and leading of the research milieu. The centre is advised by an international scientific advisory board and an external advisory council with members from society, academia and industry.
