Nat Gosden was a fictional footballer who appeared in the comic strips in the British boys' comic Roy of the Rovers during the 80s. He was a defender and midfielder, playing for Melchester Rovers, and England. He first appeared in the strip in 1980.
He was known as Grandad. According to Roy's official autobiography, he was born in 1924, which made him 56 when he was signed by Rovers.
Career
Club
He was signed from Oldfield in an attempt to replace Geoff Giles. "Grandad" added valuable experience to a young and struggling Rovers side. However, his input did not prevent relegation in the 1980/81 season.
Gosden in 1977/78 as an Oldfield player.
Gosden had a more positive influence in the promotion-winning side, and was an ever-present in 1982/83 before falling out of favour and retiring after a final hurrah in the 1984 Cup Final, his only major title with Rovers.
He retired in 1984 as a Rovers player (aged 60).
International
Gosden had 47 caps for England.
Style of play
He played as a central midfielder and centre back.
Managerial career
He went on to become Rovers youth coach. He had 47 England caps.
Legacy
He was one of the oldest – if not the oldest – to ever play for Rovers. His 47 caps for England are a great club record, only behind Blackie Gray (54 caps).
