Natalie Ann Holborow (born 1990) is a Welsh author of non fiction and poetry. Her debut poetry collection, And Suddenly You Find Yourself, published by Parthian Books, was launched at the International Kolkata Book Fair in 2017.[1] She won the Terry Hetherington Award for short fiction[2] and the Robin Reeves Prize for Young Writers in 2015[3], was runner-up in the Wales PENCymru New Voices Award 2016, and has been longlisted for the National Poetry Prize.[4] Her 2024 poetry collection, Little Universe, was short-listed for the Wales Book of the Year 2025.[5]
Life
Holborow was born in Swansea, Wales, where she lives. As a child she began "tapping out" stories to show her grandmother and then, aged sixteen, discovered the emotional effect of poetry when reading Seamus Heaney's Mid-Term Break.[6] After missing out on medical school, Holborow subsequently studied literature and graduated from Swansea University with an MA in Creative Writing. She has been writer-in-residence at the Dylan Thomas Birthplace, Swansea,[7] and is a Patron of the Leon Heart Fund, a charity supporting children and families attending the Special Care Baby Unit at Singleton Hospital, Swansea, and the cardiac ward at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.[8]
Career
Holborow's debut poetry collection, And Suddenly You Find Yourself, was published in 2017.[9] It was launched in Kolkata, India, as part of a collaboration between Parthian Books, Literature Wales, Wales Arts Review, and Bee Books in Kolkata, entitled The Valley, The city, The Village.[10] The project met in Kolkata in February 2017 and in Wales (including at the Hay Festival) in June 2017.[11] Wild Running, her first non fiction book, was published in 2025.
Her work has been published by The Stinging Fly, New Welsh Review, Parthian Books, and Seren Books, and has been highly commended by the Bridport Prize, Hippocrates Prize, the Cursed Murphy Spoken Word Award, and the Jane Martin Poetry Prize.
Holborow has undertaken writing residencies with the British Council, Literature Wales and Kultivera[12], and has appeared at the Hay Festival, where she was a guest on BBC Radio 4's The Adverb presented by poet Ian McMillan.[13]
