Caro at work

Natalie Caro (born August 14, 1985) is an American poet, educator and performer born and raised in the Bronx, New York.

Background[edit]

Natalie Caro jokingly calls herself a "Quaterrican" because she has a Puerto Rican, Italian mother and a Colombian father. She recalls always being told that she was "not Hispanic enough" because her experience has created in her a mixed Latinidad.

Caro took an interest in the arts at age of eight. She spent massive amounts of time in the public library. At the age of eleven she crossed paths with her first taste of poetry. The Collected Works of Emily Dickinson, created a bursting fire in her and she yearned to mimic Dickenson's relationship to words. Her love for the written word blossomed slowly and at eleven years old she created her first poem titled "My Neighborhood Poetry", and surely that was not the last! Natalie Caro eagerly grew fonder of poetry and continued to practice her own expressions of literature by writing songs that eventually evolved into poems.

Caro graduated with her bachelor's degree in English literature and philosophy and a minor in economics from Lehman College, in 2007. She also studied abroad at the Universidad de Salamanca for a year in 2006. Caro earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry from City College where she received a Creative Writing Fellowship in 2014.[1] Currently, she is working on her Doctor of Philosophy degree at Center for Inter-American Studies, Bielefeld University.

Career[edit]

Caro began her career as a freelance poetry performer in 2014. She was featured at CCNY MFA Reading Series, Ear Shot Reading Series, Bronx Poet Reading Series, Areito Live, Bars & Comedy, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Barrio Poetix, First Fridays at Sweet Water Dance & Yoga [2/5], Smoking Word & Drum, CCNY MFA Reading Series and more.

As a SEEK tutor, Caro provided academic assistance to students at Lehman College. She provided proofreading help, and encouragement for students who were having difficulties in their studies. She went on to be a tutor at Sylvan Learning Center in 2017. She accomplished all of this while being an adjunct professor, an academic advisor and an administrative assistant at Lehman College from the years 2007 to 2018.
