Nathan Dimoff is an American independent journalist and activist whose work focuses on police accountability, prison conditions, and First Amendment issues. He founded the digital platform America's Police Problem and has contributed reporting to citizen journalism outlets, including Photography Is Not A Crime (PINAC News). His reporting on law enforcement misconduct and prison conditions has been cited by national news outlets and in federal court filings.

Early activism and police accountability

Dimoff began publishing law enforcement accountability material in 2014, establishing the local group South Florida Cop Watch and later founding the blog America's Police Problem.[1]

In September 2016, following protests near the home of Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg over the police shooting of Corey Jones, Dimoff's Lee County residence was searched by Lee County Sheriff's deputies acting on behalf of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. The raid was connected to an investigation into online threat allegations surrounding the protests; Dimoff stated that his involvement was journalistic.[2]

In December 2016, Dimoff acted as a spokesperson for a Lee County volunteer medic detained by Iraqi authorities while returning from serving with the People's Protection Units (YPG) in Syria, working with media outlets to raise awareness of the detention.[3]

Southwest Florida reporting and police oversight

Dimoff has engaged in public records archiving and citizen oversight within Southwest Florida. In late 2020, he published public records detailing an incident on Palm Beach Boulevard involving the Fort Myers Police Department's handling and fingerprinting of Black youths at a local business.[4]

He has also submitted formal administrative complaints to municipal oversight bodies regarding local police policy, procedural compliance, and public records handling, including complaints reviewed by the City of Fort Myers Citizens Police Review Board in January 2021.[5]

Prison reform reporting

"Feeling Cute Challenge"

In April 2019, America's Police Problem published a collection of social media posts by correctional officers using the "Feeling Cute Challenge" format, in which officers posed in uniform with captions joking about mistreating inmates.[6] The story received national coverage and led to investigations and the firing or resignation of multiple prison guards in Texas.[7]

Parchman Prison

In early 2020, writing for PINAC News, Dimoff published accounts, photographs, and video provided by inmates documenting violence, fires, and substandard conditions at the Mississippi State Penitentiary (Parchman).[8] His reporting was cited in a civil rights complaint submitted to the U.S. Department of Justice by the Roderick & Solange MacArthur Justice Center and in the federal class action Alexander v. Hall (N.D. Miss.).[9][10]

Digital media and labor projects

Dimoff moderates the online community platform "I Quit My Job by Text," which aggregates digital resignation correspondence and workplace communication screenshots, and subsequently developed an online generative software utility designed to assist workers in drafting formal resignation notices.[11]
