National Association of State Chief Information Officers
The National Association of State Chief Information Officers(NASCIO), founded in 1969, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization representing state chief information officers (CIOs) and information technology executives from the states and US territories.[1]
NASCIO’s stated mission is to foster government excellence through quality business practices, information management, and technology policy.[2] NASCIO provides products and services including national conferences, peer networking, research and publications, briefings and government affairs that support the challenging role of the CIO. [3]
Membership
NASCIO’s primary membership includes state chief information officers and other senior officials from state government who have executive-level and statewide responsibility for information technology leadership.[4] State officials who are involved in agency-level information technology management may participate as members as well as representatives from federal, municipal, international government and non-profit organizations. [5] Private-sector firms may participate in NASCIO with a corporate membership and are invited to partake in the Corporate Leadership Council (CLC). [6]
The Executive Committee is the elected governance body of NASCIO.[7] The Executive Committee consists of the President, Immediate Past President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, eight Directors and two Corporate Leadership Council Representatives. [8]
The work of NASCIO each program year is supported by issue-based committees and working groups, which allow members to collaborate and examine topics of importance to state government information technology. Committees, working groups and special advisory panels are re-chartered every year and have defined goals, agreements and objectives.[9]
Publications
State CIO Survey
NASCIO partners with GrantThornton and CompTIA to survey state government IT leaders on current issues, trends and perspectives annually. The survey sponsors seek to provide these state government IT leaders with an opportunity to voice their thoughts and opinions on matters of high importance.
State CIO Top Ten Priorities
This annual publication identifies and prioritizes the top technology issues facing state government from state CIOs survey responses.
Cybersecurity Study
This bi-annual study reports findings and analysis of a comprehensive survey of state Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) conducted by NASCIO in partnership with Deloitte.
Best Practices
This annual publication outlines the eleven award recipients’ submissions from the State IT Recognition Awards.
Conferences and Awards
NASCIO hosts two conferences a year that provide all NASCIO members the opportunity to build relationships, network, share best practices and engage in educational programming on current information technology issues that relate to both the private and public sector. Since the conferences are relationship-building focused, they do not include exhibits.[10] The Midyear Conference is held in the Spring while the Annual Conference is held in the Fall. [11]

History
NASCIO was founded as the National Association for State Information Systems (NASIS), but in 1989, the membership refocused the association and changed its name to National Association of State Information Resource Executives (NASIRE). In 2001, the membership voted and agreed again for a name change to better represent its members, which resulted in today's name, the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO).[13]
