National Mario Day is an annual holiday to commemorate the Nintendo video game character Mario, on March 10th.[1][2][3] This date is chosen because MAR 10 looks like the name MARIO.[4][5] Gamers can commemorate the occasion by playing games from the series, or with mario-themed events, and coordiating on social media with the hashtag #NationalMarioDay.[6][7]

In 2016, Nintendo created a video about the event, where Mario caused chaos in their American offices;[8][9] "[h]e brought some joy to the monotonous workday in the ways only Mario could."[8] Chad Concelmo of Destructoid appears in the video.[10]

The Mario franchise is the best-selling video game franchise of all time.[11] Previously, Nintendo had declared 2013 to be the Year of Luigi.[12]

According to Dominic Candeloro, author of the 1999 book "Italians in Chicago", Nintendo weren't the only people to notice how Mar 10 looks like Mario.[13] He wrote that Chicago restauranteur Mario Avignone coined the term "Mario Day" in the 1980s, and invited his namesakes to an annual gala dinner in honor of Mario Day.
