The National Recognition Programs of the US College Board award academic honors to sophomores and juniors who take AP, PSAT/NMSQT, or PSAT 10 exams, have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher and identify as African American or Black, Hispanic or Latino, Indigenous or Native American, or attend high school in a rural area or small town. Students can apply for recognition on the College Board's website, BigFuture, during the second semester of 10th or 11th grade[1] and receive notification about their recognition applications in August of the following school year.
The National Recognition Programs were created in 2019 to promote diversity and expand on the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP).[2] During the 2022-2023 school year, College Board recognized 62,000 students through the National Recognition Programs.[3]
Benefits[edit]
Students can list recognition in their college and scholarship applications, and many schools send recruitment messages to awardees. Winners are able to download their certificates. There is no monetary award. However, some colleges offer scholarships to National Recognition winners. [4][5]
Eligibility Requirements[edit]
From the National Recognition Programs FAQ:
United States citizenship isn't required for consideration, but all students applying for the award must live in the United States, a US territory, or a US military base. Applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.5 and identify as African American or Black, Hispanic or Latino, Indigenous or Native American, or attend high school in a rural area or small town.
To be recognized, a student must score in the top 10% on the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10 for their state. Students can also be eligible for recognition if they score a 3 or higher on two or more AP Exams.
