National Rubber Ducky Day
National Rubber Duck Day was started in 1973 by the popular show, Sesame Street, when a Sesame Street calendar came out for the year 1972–1973. This calendar had January 13th marked for "Rubber Duckie's Birthday," honoring a character in the show, Ernie, and his toy rubber duck. This day eventually evolved within the fan base, and turned into National Rubber Duck Day. Every year, on January 13th, National Rubber Ducky Day is celebrated.[1][2]
Background
A rubber duck is usually a plastic toy shaped like a duck. The rubber duck started as a dog chew toy, made from rubber in the late 1800s, but eventually evolved into a floating toy that usually contains a squeaker used in water for entertainment. These rubber toys naturally inspire water play that develops muscle strength and coordination. [3] The rubber duck was inducted into the National Toy Hall Of Fame in 2013.
Origins
In 1970, on January 13th, Jim Henson performed the song “Rubber Duckie” as Ernie during an episode of Sesame Street. January 13th has been considered "National Rubber Ducky day" ever since.[4] [5]
Many may recognize the song sung by our puppet friend Ernie about his favorite rubber duck. “Rubber ducky, you’re the one. You make bath time lots of fun. Rubber ducky I’m awfully fond of you!”[6] This song first occurred in season 1 of Sesame Street in Episode 136, and due to its simplicity, the fan base loved it, which later sparked the creation of this new holiday.
Holiday

Celebration
Not to be confused with rubber duck races, this day is celebrated in numerous ways, one of which may be conducting a rubber duck race. This day is also commonly celebrated by raising money for medical research and charitable organizations. The rubber ducky is commonly used to raise money for charitable giving, so some small non-profit organizations hold events such as rubber duck races, to raise funds. Others may simply celebrate this occasion by taking a bath with, of course, a rubber duck. On this special national holiday, the Giant Rubber duck statue in Seoul could sometimes be populated, because one may think that going to the giant rubber duck is very appropriate for this occasion.[7] Rubber duck day is considered to be more of a fun, lighthearted holiday, and less formal.[8]
Memorabilia
Many adults are reminded of their childhood and reflect on all the times they played in their bath tub. Past events involving rubber ducks may also be remembered on this day, such as a cargo ship, that was coming from Japan or China with a bunch of rubber ducks and toys that spilled out into the ocean. This occurred in 1992 and lost almost 28,000 rubber ducks spread all over the world. Some have been found from California, to England.[9]
