National Tight Ends Day
National Tight Ends Day is a holiday registered to National Day Archives by the National Football League [1]. As of 2019, it is scheduled to occur in America every fourth Sunday of October, as a way to recognize and celebrate the Tight end football position [2].
History
In 2018, the phrase "Happy National Tight Ends Day" was first said by San Francisco 49ers Tight End George Kittle during a game against the Detroit Lions during a wire capture by NFL Films:[1] . To capitalize on his declaration, in 2019 the National Football League decided to promote the day as a way to "celebrate one of football's great and underrated positions" [3].
According to NFL Films's Official Blog and Website http://http://nflfilms.nfl.com/2019/10/15/national-tight-ends-day/ the backstory is part Tall tale , referencing George Halas, Mike Ditka, and John F. Kennedy:
"Thankfully, in the mid-2010’s, a rabid historian and budding young tight end named George Kittle – after spending a long weekend in the Kennedy Presidential Library – uncovered the early drafts of the proposed holiday and left Boston on a mission to fulfill JFK’s supposed dream. Through Kittle’s dogged persistence, the fourth Sunday in every October is now officially National Tight Ends Day"
During the inaugural event, Kittle and the San Francisco 49ers will give away Bobblehead dolls to acknowledge the day [2]
“Sunday is going to highlight all the great personalities. I think everyone knows there are good tight ends in the NFL, but I don’t know if the tight end position is showcased enough."
