The National Xball League (NXL) is the premier professional and divisional tournament paintball circuit in the United States and Europe. Established in 2015, the league serves as the global standard for competitive speedball, hosting a multi-event annual circuit that culminates in the historic World Cup of Paintball.
History
The NXL was originally formed as a distinct segment of the Paintball Sports Promotions (PSP) league in the early 2000s before operations were consolidated under the PSP banner. Following the collapse of the PSP after the 2014 season, industry leaders and franchise owners, spearheaded by Tom Cole, revived the NXL name in 2015 to establish a sustainable governing body for the sport.
Since its re-inception, the NXL has grown into a massive global athletic umbrella, absorbing international events and formally launching NXL Europe. In 2021, the league introduced the Women's National Xball League (WNXL), establishing the first fully professional female paintball division.
Format and Gameplay
The flagship format of the NXL is Xball, a high-speed, electronic-buzzer variation of speedball designed for spectators and digital broadcasting.
- The Match Structure: Two teams of five players square off on a 150-by-120-foot inflatable bunker field. Matches consist of a 12-to-15-minute game clock (depending on the division).
- Scoring points: A team scores a point by eliminating the opposing players and pressing an electronic buzzer mounted on the opponent's starting station.
- Point-by-Point: After a point is scored, teams return to their pits for a two-minute staging window before the next point begins. Matches end when the game clock expires or when a team triggers a "mercy rule" by building an insurmountable point lead.
2026 Rule Changes
Prior to the 2026 season, the NXL instituted sweeping mechanical overhauls to improve the sport's pace for broadcasting:
- Limited Paint Rule: Moving away from unlimited electronic hoppers and heavy pod packs, professional players are strictly limited to starting a point with a maximum of five pods and one electronic loader.
- Tiebreaker Overhaul: The league eliminated the traditional point-differential calculations, implementing a new points-scored metric and prioritizing "mercy rule" victory tallies to encourage aggressive offensive gameplay.
Pro Divisions and Structure
The NXL regulates a tiered promotion-and-relegation system spanning grassroots novice play up to elite professional tiers.
- Pro Division (US): Consisting of an exclusive tier of twenty professional franchises (including legacy teams like San Diego Dynasty and the CK Hurricanes).
- WNXL: The premier professional women's competitive circuit.
- Semi-Pro and Divisional tiers: Ranked sequentially from Division 2 down to Division 5, allowing amateur regional operations to earn professional classifications through season points standings.
The World Cup of Paintball
The crown jewel of the NXL circuit is the annual World Cup, traditionally held in Kissimmee, Florida. Tracing its lineage back over three decades, the modern NXL World Cup draws nearly 5,000 active athletic participants and upwards of 500 teams spanning dozens of global countries, making it the largest competitive event in the paintball industry.
