Natural math is a holistic approach to mathematics education, pioneered by Maria Droujkova, focusing on playful exploration, "easy complexity", and personal journey.[1] Droujkova, along with a group of like-minded authors, writers, and experience designers, founded a company, Natural Math, LLC, in 2001,[2] as "a community for families, math circles, and other learning groups".[3] The company funds many of their books in crowdfunding campaigns and has made materials and courses open under Creative Commons licenses and distribute their books via "name-your-price" pdfs.[4]

Calculus for kids[edit]

"Easy complexity" is one of the seven principles of Natural Math, as stated by the company:

EASY COMPLEXITY is how a five-year-old learns calculus. Tell stories, make art, and find analogies that make your math friendly. Gently grow your happy familiarity with complex ideas. We make math easy enough for open play and complex enough for advanced mastery.[5]

Natural math proponents argue that math education should be begin with activities that are "complex (allowing them to be taken in many different directions) yet easy (making them conducive to immediate play)."[1][6]

Math Storytelling Day[edit]

The Natural Math community created Math Storytelling Day in 2009, as a holiday to be observed on September 25, the birthday of Maria Droujkova.[7][8]
