History[edit]

Naver Academic (Korean: 네이버 학술정보) is a free web search engine for academic literature, developed by Naver Corporation. It started with the name of Naver Knowledge Market (Korean: 네이버 지식시장) in 2004 and offered an open market enabling users to trade reports, articles, professional images and other documents.[1]

From the renewal in 2008, it renamed to Naver Academic, and scholarly search became its main feature.[2] It also renamed to Naver Academic. Therefore, the actual opening year of Naver Academic is 2008. Starting from 2010 with the metadata of Springer, it indexed articles in English as well by making agreements with global academic publishers.[3] At the end of 2014, it indexed over 26 million scholarly documents.[4] After fast expansion in its coverage from 2014, it indexed over 150 million academic documents in September 2017.[5]

Re-launched in September 2017, Naver Academic started to provide its full service in English and in mobile.[5]

Features[edit]

Naver Academic collected metadata from various global and local academic publishers and web sites and indexed for its search service. The aggregated search process of Naver Academic has a tremendous role in improving access to research just as Google Scholar do.[6]

From the renewal in September 2017, Naver Academic puts high weight on citation counts and recency. Consequently, the first search result is usually highly cited and recently published article.[7]

Several studies for the quality of Naver Academic are done by researchers, and those studies analyzed Naver Academic by comparing with Google Scholar, Microsoft Academic or Korea Citation Index.[8][9]
