Naver Dictionary

Naver's dictionary은 is an online dictionary service provided by Naver. It consists of a language dictionary, an encyclopedia ('Naver Knowledge Encyclopedia'), and a translator, as well as a 'participation translation' (PC only) in which Internet users participate in translation projects, and a 'quiz' (mobile only) where words and conversation in language dictionaries are learned in a quiz format.

A dictionary of languages[edit]

Naver's language dictionary started in 1999 with the English dictionary service. Early Naver Dictionary had partnered with YBM's[1], then began to provide the database with the Dong-A Prime English Dictionary around 2000... Also, it is introducing an automatic search pop-up program called "Nexurch 119," which allows users to search for English words during web surfing.[2] Since then, Naver expanded its service, and in the early 2000s, it was able to support a total of four types, including Japanese, Chinese and Chinese dictionaries.[3]

At the end of 2016, Naver announced a plan to invest a total of 10 billion won over the next five years in strengthening the contents of language dictionaries, including revisions of old dictionaries such as French dictionaries, and the establishment of a multilingual dictionary in Myanmar.[4]

It started in 2000 based on a database of the Doosan Encyclopedia (Dupidia) and started to actively add other dictionary contents in 2012 when it was renamed as the current name "Naver Knowledge Encyclopedia." As of August 2017, a total of 2,600 individual dictionary content and 2.9 million headings have been registered, which is equivalent to the combined levels of Chinese Wikipedia and German Wikipedia.

Translator[edit]

An online translator service provided by Naver, which falls under the category of Naver Dictionary. As of April 2017, Web translators supported Korean translations of English, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Thai, Russian, German, Vietnamese and Hindi. There is also a website translation service and currently supports English, Japanese and Chinese. Besides the translator, there is a "participatory translation" in which Naver members directly participate in the Korean-English translation.

As of July 19, 2018, Naver's translation service was integrated with Naver Papago, another translation service, and the link to Naver's dictionary homepage was also replaced by the link to Papago.[5]
