Navsari Agricultural University
With the enactment of the Gujarat Agricultural University Act 2004 on May 1, 2004, Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari, became a state agricultural university. The university serves all of South Gujarat, which includes the districts of Surat, Valsad, Navsari, Narmada, Tapi, and Dang. The university's three main purposes are related to agriculture and include teaching, research, and service.[1][2][3]
Agriculture Education[edit]
At present seven colleges currently provide courses leading to degrees in Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Agribusiness Management, Agricultural Engineering, and Agricultural Technology at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels.[4][5][6]
Agricultural Research[edit]
25 research centres at 15 locations conducts need-based research on mandatory crops like rice, sugarcane, cotton, sorghum, small millets, mango, banana, sapota, and vegetables at Navsari Agricultural University.
The Navsari Campus houses the Mega Seed Pulses and Castor Research Unit, Soil Science Department, Soil and Water Management Research Unit, Main Sugarcane Research Station, Food Quality Testing Laboratory, Main Rice Research Centre, Regional Horticulture Research Station, Floriculture Farm, Vegetable Farm, and Organic Farm. Other research centres outside the Navsari Campus include Fruit Research Station Gandevi, Agricultural Research Station Achhalia, Agricultural Research Station Tanchha, Agriculture Experimental Station Paria, Regional Cotton Research Station Maktampura Bharuch, Regional Rice Research Station Vyara, Main Sorghum Research Station Athwa, Main Cotton Research Station Surat, Wheat Research Station Bardoli,Niger Research Station Vanarasi,National Agricultural Research.[1][7]
Agriculture Extension[edit]
Navsari Agriculture plays important role in transferring and disseminating latest technology through trainings and demonstrations. Navsari Agricultural university act through KVK (Krishi Vigyan Kendra). The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) established the Krishi Vigyan Kendra to showcase its efforts in creating, evaluating, refining, and disseminating agricultural technology. At present 5 Krishi Vigyan Kendra located at Navsari, Surat, Waghai, Vyara and Dediyapada carryout farmer extension activities. At Navsari Sardar Smriti Kendra (SSK) and Agriculture Technology Information Centra (ATIC) plays important role in Farmer’s Training and extension activities. [8][9]
