Navy Joan Roberts (born November 2018) is an American child.
She is the granddaughter of U.S. President Joe Biden, as she is the daughter of Hunter Biden and Lunden Roberts.[1] In 2023, Navy became the subject of American political news reporting, in part due to her proximity to the presidential family.[2] She is particularly a subject of right-wing news reporting.[3]
News coverage was initially in relation to a publicised paternity dispute between her parents; later resolved through DNA evidence. Later media coverage of Navy related to public perceptions of her treatment by the Biden family.[4][5][1][6]
Early life
Navy Roberts was born in 2018 to Lunden Roberts and Hunter Biden. Lunden was working at the time as a personal assistant to Hunter Biden in mid-2018; their daughter was born later that year.[2] By the time of Navy's birth, Hunter had stopped responding to Roberts's messages, including a message informing him of the child's birth date.[2] Shortly afterward, Hunter removed Navy Roberts from his health insurance.[7]
Navy's mother sued in May 2019 and, through DNA testing, established Mr. Biden as Navy's father. In her custody filing, her mother said that Hunter had never met Navy.[8] The two later met after the trial.[citation needed] Hunter Biden was ordered to make child support payments.[9]
In July 2023, the New York Times reported that Navy Roberts was aware of the identity of her father and that President Joe Biden was her grandfather.[10] As of the time of reporting, Joe Biden had not met nor publicly mentioned Navy.[11] She has been photographed travelling to Washington D.C. as a tourist alongside her mother, Lunden.[2]
Media attention
In July 2023, Navy Roberts became the subject of further media attention. She was the subject of an opinion column in the New York Times by Maureen Dowd;[1] the publication of this column itself became a topic of news coverage in the National Review and the New York Post.[6] Dowd's column criticised a perceived failure of the president to acknowledge Navy Roberts publicly as his granddaughter and made comment on the inconsistency between this and his professed family values.[12]
Following this column, Navy Roberts and the topic of her acknowledgement were the subject of further discussion in the media, including on The View.[13] She is regularly the subject of coverage in Republican partisan media, such as Fox News.[14][15]

In mid-2018, Ms. Roberts was working as a personal assistant to Mr. Biden, according to a person close to her and messages from a cache of Mr. Biden’s files. Their daughter was born later that year, but by then, Mr. Biden had stopped responding to Ms. Roberts’s messages, including one informing him of the child’s birth date. Shortly after their daughter was born in November 2018, he removed Ms. Roberts and the child from his health insurance, which led Ms. Roberts to contact Mr. Lancaster.

She filed a lawsuit in May 2019, and DNA testing that year established that Mr. Biden was the father of the child. In a motion for custody filing in December 2019, Ms. Roberts said that he had never met their child and “could not identify the child out of a photo lineup.

The girl is aware that her father is Hunter Biden and that her paternal grandfather is the president of the United States. She speaks about both of them often, but she has not met them. Her maternal grandfather, Rob Roberts, described her as whip-smart and funny.

But the president has not yet met or publicly mentioned his other grandchild. His White House has not answered questions about whether he will publicly acknowledge her now that the child support case is settled.
