Nea Kriti (neakriti) is a regional newspaper and news website (https://www.neakriti.gr), with it's headquarters located in Heraklion at the island of Crete, Greece.[1]

Its name comes from the Greek Nea Kriti (Νέα Κρήτη) which means "News from Crete", indicating its local nature regarding the type of news found in this newspaper.

Since its first publication (September 25, 2000 [2]), Nea Kriti has been using its own printing and distribution network. Neakriti also provides printing and distribution services to other local and regional newspapers in Crete.

Nea Kriti is housed together with the Crete TV tv station and the Radio 984 radio station under the same management. Ten years after its first printed issue, neakriti.gr was launched (April 2010) to provide online news - based on the existing newspaper daily content. Today neakriti.gr is running independently of the newspaper, staffed with its own journalists focusing exclusively on the site content.

Both the newspaper and neakriti.gr belong the Kyklos SA company, which together with Ikaros SA (that contains the CreteTV channel and the radio station Radio984), form a media group under the same management.[3][4][5]

Newspaper[edit]

Nea Kriti, since its beginning, has followed the European newspaper standards in appearance and content. The first issue was distributed on September 25th, 2000.

The newspaper was mostly focused on local news regarding the region of Crete (Kriti in Greek means "Crete"). However, the subjects covered by Neakriti vary from international to national news and sports news.

Specification[edit]

"Nea Kriti" is published daily (except Sundays) with 40-64 pages. The average daily tillage is 9,000 sheets. It is printed on a privately-owned cylindrical press, while for the typesetting and digital image prepress processing, equipment (Apple-Fuji) is used.[6]

History[edit]

First Edition[edit]

Since April 2010, the neakriti.gr website has been online to host the journalistic material that originally existed in the newspaper. The website was made by ATC [7] without mobile design in mind. Soon it was realized the potential of mobile design in websites and emphasis was given on mobile devices. The existed in-house software engineering team focused on creating a mobile experience. The result was a separate website (in a different subdomain) with emphasis on loading content to serve mobile devices fast.

That approach continued, making the mobile version of neakriti.gr the second greek site to incorporate Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) based on the latest mobile standards required by Google, as well as one of the first websites to incorporate microdata via schema.org to better describe the content of the articles to search engines.

Second Edition[edit]

When the potential of the online version of the newspaper was realized, it ceased to be part of the printed version and thus became independent by creating its own journalistic group powering exclusively the website.

Characteristic of this differentiation is the creation of new, different logo for the Neakriti website, together with the agreement of complete recreation of the site by ATCOM in October 2017.[8]

The new neakriti website followed the responsive design approach, so the mobile version of the previous website got completely removed. The new website became available to the public on February 21, 2018, and continues evolving to date with SEO and performance optimizations in mind.

ekloges.neakriti.gr[edit]

Since the summer of 2015, a dedicated website has been set up (http://ekloges.neakriti.gr) to host the results of the Greek national elections and the last greek referendum. The results of the elections are given with 409 maps per election result from 2007 until today and the operator can freely access these results including a detailed ranking in seats and elected deputies.

Mobile Apps[edit]

In addition to its website presence, neakriti.gr allows its readers to get an optimized mobile experience via native apps targeting both the iOS and Android platforms. Both applications were created in-house via the neakriti's software engineering team.

There are currently three mobile applications available. An Android app for phones and tablets, and an iOS app for the iPhone, and an iPad application that is .[9][10]

The Neakriti Android application is available in Google Play and was first released in 2011. It is a native Android application that was initially written in Eclipse, while now it is being developed in Android Studio. The application is written using the Java programming language. It is available for devices running Android 4.0 and higher.

A new native Android version is currently in the works targeting a more optimized user experience for both phones and tablets. The new (upcoming) Android version is open sourced and can be found at GitHub. It is also a native application written in Android Studio using the Java programming language.
