Nebakov Castle is a small ruined fortified residence built in the late 13th century. It was built on a narrow promontory overlooking the Žehrovka River. Nebakov was first mentioned in 1455 as property of lady Machna of Nebakov. It is however much older, and the archaeological excavations of 1925 and 1973 date it to the late 1200s. The castle likely burned down by the end of the 15th century, and by 1538 it is said to have been fully abandoned.
Description
The defunct castle stands on a narrow promontory above the confluence of the Žehrovka River and a stream flowing into Rovno na Sobotecku and follows a donjon-type layout. The site is essentially divided into three parts.
The front section, separated from the mainland by an isthmus ditch, formed the main core of the castle. This area was constructed in an unusual manner: the natural rock was leveled and hewn along the sides, a perimeter wall was then built to enclose the space, and the interior was subsequently filled with earth. On this artificially created platform stood a large building, probably a half-timbered residential tower with an adjoining extension founded eccentrically rather than centrally. Access was provided by a staircase cut directly into the rock.
The middle section preserves the remains of two rooms, probably basements, also carved into the rock. The rear section, separated by the faint trace of a ditch, consists of a rocky, mound-like formation that once supported a wooden structure.
In popular culture
Nebakov is featured as a primary location in the game Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. The playable character visits Nebakov on a diplomatic mission; however, they later realize it is controlled by bandits under Jan Žižka. When returning to besiege it, the army is ambushed and slaughtered. You are taken prisoner at the Fortress before realizing that you and the bandits both fight on the side of king Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia. When preparing to leave Nebakov is besieged by forces loyal to Sigismund of Hungary. Nebakov is destroyed by a bombard, and the characters taken prisoner.
