Neil Pharaoh
Neil David Pharaoh (born 19 February 1984), is an Australian social justice and human rights campaigner, and the Labor candidate for Prahran, Victoria in the Victorian Legislative Assembly Election.[when?] He is openly gay.[1] If elected, Pharaoh would be the first ever openly gay person to be elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly.[citation needed]
Pharaoh was born in Canberra, and has lived in Melbourne since 2005.[citation needed] He graduated with degrees in law and commerce from the Australian National University (ANU).[citation needed] Prior to his candidacy, he worked in marketing and business development for the Foundation for Young Australians, The Children's Protection Society, Electronic Data Systems and the Australian Red Cross.[citation needed]
Pharaoh has also been the National co-convenor of Australian Rainbow Labor since 2011, where he led the national campaign to change the ALP's national platform on marriage equality, and numerous other platform changes. During this time he has been critical about the positions taken by a number of senior politicians on the issue of LGBT rights and equality.[2] Neil is involved heavily in philanthropy and sits on the "Nexus" Global Youth Philanthropy Network Board, and Nexus Australia Youth Summit Organizing Committee,[3] as well as volunteer roles in the social purpose sector in Melbourne.[citation needed]
