Nelissen Bricks (officially: Nelissen Steenfabrieken NV) is a Belgian manufacturer of facing bricks and brick slips. The family-owned company, founded in 1921, is based in Kesselt (Lanaken) in the province of Limburg. The company also supplies external wall insulation systems. It is currently managed by the fourth generation of the Nelissen family.

History

The company was founded in 1921 by Alfons Nelissen in response to the high demand for building materials following the First World War. The location in Kesselt was selected due to the presence of loess (limy clay) in the local soil.[1]

Over the decades, the company evolved from artisanal production using temporary field kilns to industrial manufacturing. The original ring kiln (Hoffmann kiln) was eventually replaced by modern gas-fired tunnel kilns. The original industrial chimney has been preserved on the site as industrial heritage.

In 2021, the company celebrated its centenary. To mark this occasion, the "Brick Academy" was inaugurated, a knowledge centre and company museum showcasing the history of brick production and local archaeological finds[2].

Activities and products

Nelissen specialises in the production of hand-moulded facing bricks. The range includes over 100 colours and various formats. The company exports a significant portion of its production to European markets, with the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, and Germany being key sales territories.

Innovation and sustainability

The company developed the N70 series, a narrower brick (±7 cm thick instead of the traditional 10 cm). This format aligns with the 'Eco-formats' charter of the Belgian Brick Association and reduces raw material usage and transport weight per square metre of façade, whilst leaving more space for insulation.[3]

Insulation systems

The company offers the Iso-Façade system, a solution combining Nelissen brick slips and insulation panels for both thermal renovation and new build projects.

Design

In collaboration with designer Roel Vandebeek, the company launched the DUBIO brick. Its design creates an optical illusion of thin, stacked bricks. This product has received several international design awards[4][5][6].

Awards and recognition

The company has received several distinctions for product innovation and design:

  • Henry van de Velde Award (2018): Winner of the Design Solution Award (Dubio)[5]
  • German Design Award (2019): Special Mention for the Dubio brick.[4]
  • BLT Built Design Award (2023): Winner in the Construction Product Design category.[6]
