Nelson Michael Lopez II (born January 1, 1988)[1] is an American chess player and YouTuber. He is a national master (NM) in the United States Chess Federation.[2] He runs a YouTube channel by the name of Chess Vibes, where he publishes educational and entertainment-based videos on chess. He also runs a secondary channel named Chess Adventures, following characters he made on an adventure, each video containing chess puzzles designed for the viewer to try to solve the puzzles and learn about chess tactics.

Chess career[edit]

Nelson has been playing competitive chess since a young age.[3] In 1998, he placed a tied first in the 1998 Virginia Scholastic Championships.[4] Also in 1998, he participated in the 1998 Philadelphia World Open and won an equal second place.[4][5] In 2001, Nelson participated in the 11th David Zofchak Memorial and won in class C with 3.5/5 points; in the last round, he nearly drew the winner and state champion of the tournament, David Miller, although still lost.[6]

In 2006, Nelson, then in North Carolina, participated in the Denker Tournament of High School Champions, winning the tournament.[7][8] He enrolled at the University of Texas at Dallas in the engineering department with a full academic scholarship.[8][9] Also in 2006, he won his candidate master title after participating in the 2006 US Masters Championship, scoring 4/9 points.[10][11][12] In 2007, he earned his national master title from the United States Chess Federation after winning second place out of all sections in the Friday Night Swiss tournament.[13] He participated in the 2008 UTD IM Invitational, scoring 2/9 points.[14][15]

He participated in the 2014 Texas State Championship, scoring 3.5/7 points.[16][17] Nelson took a break from chess after 2014,[18] focusing on his IT career, but later quit his job to return to chess and to focus on content creation.[19] He participated in the 13th annual Southwest Class tournament in 2022, scoring 3/9 points and losing about 43 points of rating.[20][21] In November 2023, he participated in a 4-round club match between the Marshall Chess Club and the Texas Chess Center, playing on behalf of the Texas Chess Center, along with other titled players like GM Rahul Srivatshav and WGM Anastasya Paramzina. Nelson played against CM Zachary Tanenbaum, and lost all four rounds, along with most of his team performing similarly, and Marshall Chess Club won with a GP total of 16.5 to TCC's 3.5.[22]

Online career[edit]

Nelson started his YouTube channel on September 15, 2020, calling it Chess Vibes. He began making videos on chess, including educational videos on tactics and strategy, chess openings, and analysis of notable chess games.[23] Since then, he has gained over 400k subscribers and garnered over 110,000,000 views on his channel.[24] On June 19, 2023, he also started a secondary channel, Chess Adventurers, mainly focused on chess puzzles and more entertainment-based content. Since start, the channel has garnered over 6k subscribers and 250k views.[25]

Software career[edit]

After college, Lopez worked as a software engineer, working on projects for Microsoft and Amazon. He later quit to focus on chess content creation after his channel took off.[23]
