Emuobonuvie Neo Akpofure, (born 1 July 1994), popularly known as Neo is a Nigerian reality tv star and actor. He gained prominence as the third runner up of Big Brother Naija season 5.[1] He is a cousin of fellow reality tv star Venita Akpofure and son of Senior Advocate of Nigeria Chief Efecha L. Akpofure.[2][3]

Background and family[edit]

Neo was born in Delta, Nigeria to the family of Chief Efecha Leo Akpofure, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.[3] He has said that he was born in a car.[4][5] His father is a lawyer while his mother is a retired prison warden.[1] He grew up spending time in prison due to the nature of his mother's work as a prison warden.[6] He had his primary education in Delta State and his secondary education in Edo State.

He was born into a polygamous family of more than twenty children. His parents split after his birth and he moved in with his mother. His family is a family of numerous lawyers who come from Kokori in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State.[7] His grandfather, Chief M.O. Akpofure, was also a lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria while his grandmother, late Agnes Akpometeghore Akpofure was a distinguished traditionalist.[8][9] Neo enrolled to study to become a lawyer at the University of Calabar.[10]

He is a cousin of fellow Reality TV star and actress Venita Akpofure.[11]

Controversies[edit]

Public spat with his cousin Venita[edit]

Neo was involved in a highly publicized dispute with his cousin Venita. The cause of their fight was his choice of girlfriend, which his estranged cousin Venita disapproved of.[12] In an interview, Neo asked Venita to stay out of his love life and personal affairs[13] while Venita came on air to reiterate that her issue with his relationship is the dynamics of the relationship, stating that his girlfriend has not allowed him attain his full potential.[2] The duo later reconciled with each other[14] in the aftermath of Neo's breakup with his girlfriend.[15][16]

Viral video of him washing his girlfriend's pants on air[edit]

Neo spurred reactions from the public after a video of him washing the underwears of his erstwhile girlfriend Victoria 'Vee' Adeleye went viral.[17] Washing pants for your girlfriend is seen as one of the ultimate symbols of male servitude in a relationship in the Nigerian culture.[18] Amongst other people that spoke on the matter, DJ Cuppy said everyone should wash their own pants while Toke Makinwa said she is now looking for a man that can wash her own pants.[19][20]

Big Brother Nigeria[edit]

Neo entered the fifth season of Big Brother Naija as the third contestant on 24 July 2020. He was viewed as favored to win by his fellow housemate Dorathy.[21] He was a shock top five finalist and ended the show as the third runner up.[22][23]
