Neos Zygos, formerly known as Settlement of Returned Expatriates Greeks[2] or "Prosfyges" (Greek: Πρόσφυγες) which means Refugees. It is a settlement, which is located 12 km[3] northwest of Kavala [4] at an altitude of 99 meters above sea level. It is built near and west of the EO Kavala - Drama, between the villages of Zygos (South), Palaia Kavala (Southwest), Amygdaleona (North) and Polystylo (East). The settlement was created with a government grant for the housing of Expatriates Returned Pontian Greeks[5] from the Soviet Union[6]. From 1990 to 1993, 110 families were settled[7]. It is reported in 1991 to be attached to the community of Zygos[8]. According to the Kallikratis Programme[9], together with Zygos constitute the municipal community of Zygos which belongs to the municipal unit of Philippi of the municipality of Kavala and according to the 2011 census has a population of 572 inhabitants. During the Administrative divisions of Greece with the Kapodistrias reform ("Kapodistrias" plan)[10], until 2010, it belonged to the former Municipality of Philippi[11]. In January 2022, it joined the Municipality of Kavala[12] in the Kavala regional unit, Greece after 30 years[13] and changed its name from "Prosfyges" to "Neos Zygos"[14], since the previous name was incorrect, because most of the inhabitants were not refugees or immigrants, but expatriates[15].
Sport
The village has two Athletic Associations of Freestyle Wrestling[16] (Alexander the Great[17] and Pontos[18]), and a Football Team called Helidoni ( Greek: Χελιδόνι, English: Hirundo), which ceased to exist in 2017.
Extra
In addition, it has a new Personal weather station[19], which, based on information[20], is the first station in the eastern part of the Kavala plain, as well as the first station in the network that measures the intensity of total solar radiation[21].
