Nepali poetry is a tradition of poetry written in the Nepali language. The earliest surviving Nepali poetry, written in old Nepali, the direct predecessor of modern Nepali, may have been composed as early as the 16th-19th century.

Early poetry[edit]

The earliest recognisable still surviving date back to the Unification of Nepal period. The poets around this time wrote about the war and Gurkhas bravery.[1] Subhananda Das's Pr̥thvīnārāyaṇa śāha (पृथ्वीनारायण शाह) is the example of this work; an work praising the King Prithvi Narayan Shah who became the first monarch of unified Nepal.[2] Following the Treaty of Sugauli, poems became more devotional (especially based around the Śruti tradition).[1]
