The Netherlands Society of Cinematographers (NSC) is the Dutch society of directors of photography, founded in 1994 for the advancement of the craft of cinematography.[1][2][3][4][5][6] The society has two types of memberships; full members and associate members. Full member are chosen through a nomination system[7] and can use the post-nominal letters "NSC"[8]. Associate members can be aspiring full members if they have work in the field of cinematography, or can be working cinematography-related fields (e.g. gaffers, color graders, camera-assistants, Steadicam-operators). The latter associate members cannot become full members as full membership is reserved for cinematographers. In 2019, to celebrate their 25th anniversary, the society published a manifesto called The New Deal in an effort to ameliorate the quality of film making.[9][10][11][12][13][14]

History[edit]

The society was founded July 25, 1994 by the following cinematographers, forming the first board.

Theo Bierkens president
Hendrik Risch treasurer
Paul van den Bos secretary
Hein Groot vice president
Jules van den Steenhoven chair
Lex Wertwijn chair
Edwin Verstegen[15] chair

Publications[edit]

In 2012 the NSC published the book Shooting Time: cinematographers on cinematography[16], about the art of cinematography, through conversations with nineteen directors of photography from a variety of countries and backgrounds, with as common denominator an extremely high level of artistic accomplishment (Luciano Tovoli, Vilmos Zsigmond, Anton van Munster, Robby Müller, Dante Spinotti, Christian Berger, Slawomir Idziak, Frederick Elmes, Walther van den Ende, Edward Lachman, Roger Deakins, Maryse Alberti, Bruno Delbonnel, Pieter Vermeer, Benoît Debie, Melle van Essen, Nicolas Provost, Alexis Zabe, and Mátyás Erdély). The book was edited by Richard van Oosterhout, Maarten van Rossem and Peter Verstraten. It was launched at the Eye Film Institute and a first copy of the book was handed to cinematographer Edward Lachman.[17][18][19][20][21]

Prizes[edit]

The NSC has awarded the Robby Müller Award[22][23][24], together with the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) and Andrea Müller-Schirmer, widows of Robby Müller, each year since 2020. The award "honours an ‘image maker’ (director of photography, filmmaker or visual artist) who, in the spirit of the late Robby Müller, has created an authentic, credible and emotionally striking visual language throughout their oeuvre."[25] During the festival, the winner is awarded a gallery print of one of Robby Müller’s rare Polaroids, as well as the opportunity to present a masterclass on their work.

Prize winners are:

Year Winner Function Country
2020 Diego García[26][27] Cinematographer Mexico
2021 Kelly Reichardt[28][29] Filmmaker United States
2022 Sayombhu Mukdeeprom[30][31][32] Cinematographer Thailand
