Neththipola (Sinhala: නෙත්තිපොල) is a small village located in the Kurunegala District, North Western Province in Sri Lanka. The village is bordered by a rock known as Algamkanda. Neththipola falls within the Polgahawela Polling Division and the North Western Provincial Council.

People[edit]

Currently there are 62 families living in Neththipola, with a population of 298. The majority of the residents are Sinhalese. Many people living in the village engage in agricultural activities and others travel daily to the nearby towns like Pothuhera, Narammala and Kurunegala for work. Lack of a transport service to the village is an issue with people travelling for 1 km (1 mi) by foot to reach the nearest bus service. People have access to free Antenna TV and FM radio facilities. In addition Dialog and Mobitel provides 4G Internet service to the village.

Religious Institutions[edit]

  • Majority of people living in the village are Buddhist. Neththipola Raja Maha Viharaya serves as the main institution for their religious work. Sunday School operated there provide religious education to the children in the village. There are programs on every Poya Day for people to observe Atasil.
  • In addition there is a Buddha Statue situated in the middle of the village.

Health Care[edit]

A modern maternity and well child clinic is in operation in the village serving pregnant women and children in the village and also from outside the village.

Agriculture[edit]

  • Rice is the main crop grown in the village with more than 80% of the village consists of paddy fields growing rice. Rice is the staple diet of Sri Lankan people.[1]
  • Vegetables including beans, ladies fingers, tomatoes, drumsticks are grown in the village and are for household use. None is grown in large scale in the village.
  • Coconut[2], Jackfruit, Mango, Cashewnut, Watermelon, guava and Dragon fruit are the major fruits growing in this village.
  • Spices growing in the village include pepper, cinnamon, chilies and beetle and are bought by vendors coming to the village from outside and sold to other parts of the country or exported.
  • Cattle farming is done to obtain cow milk but never for Beef as cow is considered to be sacred in our country. Every day milk is collected from farmers by Highland.

Wild Animals[edit]

Many bird species including parrots, Demalichcha, Mayna can be seen. Pigs, peacocks and water monitors are also seen. Venomous snakes like cobras, Kraits and vipers[3] are found frequently in the wild.

Businesses[edit]

Notable businesses operating in the village are; Sisira Stores, Siril Motor Garage, Wasantha Dragon Fruit Farm and NixBee Business Consultancy.

  • Sisira stores, operating since 1990 retailing essential raw food items like rice, dhal, potatoes, beans, sugar, tea powder, noodles and dried fish. In addition it has many other household items including soap, shampoo, washing powder for the people in the village.
  • Siril Motor Garage, operating from 1992 and serving the people in the village with vehicle service and repair.
  • Wasantha Dragon Fruit Farm[4] has been operating since 2008, growing and selling dragon fruit commercially to supermarkets in Kurunegala. They have over 250 dragon fruit plants, which are harvested two times a year.
  • NixBee Business Consultancy is in operation from 2015 and serving both local and international clients online with business plans, graphic design needs and running social media.[5]

Hardships[edit]

  • Major hardship faced by people is the lack of a Public transport service to the village.
  • The road running through the village is broken in most parts but renovations have been done over the years with concrete.
