The New England Statistical Society (NESS) is a society based in the New England region in the United States devoted to the advancement of scholarship and applications of statistical science.

Founding and Structure of the Society[edit]

The society was founded in April 2017.[1] after the 31st New England Statistics Symposium was held at the University of Connecticut. It is a non-profit organization. [2] The founding President of the society was Xiao-Li Meng[1], followed by Ming-Hui Chen [3]. NESS is advised by a Society Council [4]

With the explosive growth in data science, the society has expanded rapidly in the years since its founding[5], with members including academics, industry and government professionals, and students.

Activities of the Society[edit]

The Society is engaged in a broad spectrum of activities involving academic research and training as well as applications in a wide range of industries. It hosts regular seminars, webinars, symposia, and workshops, featuring research presentations and educational programs involving government, industry, and academic institutions. These include the NESS colloquia.[6] and NextGen Data Science Day [7]

The New England Journal of Statistics in Data Science[8].[9] is published by NESS. Featuring cutting edge research, the journal uses an innovative method of peer review process that ensures both quality and speedy dissemination of new findings. The Society also publishes a newsletter[10]

NESS also offers several awards. These include the Chernoff Excellence in Statistics Award.[11] and the IBM Student Research Awards[12]

The Society's educational arm is formed by the Education Committee [13], which sponsors programs for students and offers scholarships [14] for students from underrepresented communities in the field.
