New Moon (stylized in all caps) is the sixth extended play by South Korean girl group AOA. It was released by FNC Entertainment and distributed by Kakao M on November 26, 2019, and features the lead single "Come See Me".
It follows their fifth EP Bingle Bangle (2018). It is the group's first album to be promoted as a five-member group, following Choa's and Mina's departure in June 2017 and May 2019, respectively.
Background and release
In August 2019, AOA joined the reality show Queendom produced by Mnet. Though they ended up ranking fourth among six contestants, they gained a lot of attention due to their ability to show off different sides as an experienced 7-year-old K-pop girl group.[1][2]
On November 14, 2019, FNC Entertainment confirmed that AOA would be returning as a five-member group in late November, marking their first comeback since Choa's and Mina's departure in June 2017 and May 2019, respectively.[3] It was later confirmed that the group would be returning with their sixth extended play titled New Moon on November 26 and AOA will transform into "moon hunters". FNC announced the group's comeback by releasing two posters featuring the titles of the extended play and the title track "Come See Me".[4][1]
According to FNC, the album's theme is about how AOA "is being trapped with shackles by the moon even though it is shining brightly on them [and] hopes for someone who will come and ‘save’ them and continue their journey to search for freedom by becoming ‘moon hunters’."[5] The concept for New Moon centers around "moon hunters," who "cannot escape or outwit the celestial object as their movements are constantly monitored." The songs in the album will relay the story of a group of moon hunters who are searching for freedom.[6]
Given this concept, the members will be showcasing two sides to their concept, “Aiming at moon” and “Observed by moon”. The first concept shows AOA dressed in all-black outfits, beaded and studded in order to highlight their strong yet elegant features. “Aiming at moon” is self-explanatory: It shows AOA as they hunt and aim to escape from the moon. Their second concept shows them through the eyes of the moon, which conveys a rich atmosphere and mimicking the features of a CCTV feed. Contrary to the previous concept, “Observed by moon” shows the girls doused in light, constantly being observed by the gaze of the moon.[7]
Various group and individual teasers --including jacket posters, story cards, teaser videos, highlight medley, tracklist-- were released concurrently through the group's Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube from November 14 to 23.[8][9] On November 19, the members teased the choreography for the title track "Come See Me" by uploading a short clip of the group dance practicing the song on their each respective Instagram account.
Composition
On November 22, the album's tracklist was revealed to have a total of 5 songs. Member Jimin participated in writing the lyrics for "Come See Me," "Sorry," and "Magic Spell."
Promotion
"Sorry" was released on October 25, 2019 as a part of promotion for the Queendom Final Comeback contest. This was AOA's first official release as a five-member group. The group performed "Sorry" for the first time on October 31 in the final episode of Queendom.[10] It was later included in New Moon.
"Come See Me" was released, along with its music video, as the lead single in conjunction with the EP on November 26. The title track, which is said to express the warmth of the night, will explore AOA's dreamier side, showcase their elegant and powerful presence as a five-member group.[4]
AOA held their comeback showcase titled New Moon on November 26.[11] The group promoted the lead single "Come See Me" for two weeks on various weekly domestic music shows, from November 29 on Music Bank[6] to December 8 on Inkigayo.
The group's members also appeared on many broadcasted TV shows to promote the album, including JTBC's Knowing Bros, Idol Room, and tVN's DoReMi Market on November 23, 26, and 30, respectively.
Critical reception
Billboard described the first track and lead single "Come See Me" having the "addicting electro-pop melody,"[2] while the members are "utilizing a fun-yet-captivating Western sound." Meanwhile, Kpop Herald also noted that the lead single "combines strong beats with lyrical guitar sounds."[12] The second track, "Sorry," is described to "boast a new emotional previously unexplored in AOA's past music." The fourth track, "Ninety Nine," is noted as "a wink to [the group]'s past flirty sound as something fun for longtime fans." And the final track of EP, "My Way," is a "funky, stomping ode to independence."[13]
Commercial performance
Gaon debuted at number 3 on the Gaon Album Chart for the week ending November 30, 2019.[14]
