New Schooler

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

New Schooler (ニュースクーラー) is a Japanese Beatbox crew and YouTube group. The five members consist of Kawamu, Kanburi, Shimoren, Bayashi, and Chinen. Their music style combines human beatboxing with a capella, meaning every sound is from their mouths; they do not use any musical instruments in their tracks.

New Schooler won third place in the 2021 Grand Beatbox Battle World League Crew Wildcard competition[1], but because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that 2020 wildcard winners would compete in 2021, only the first place wildcard crew winner for 2021 would be able to compete at GBB in Poland for that year (usually first through third place would compete at the GBB competition).

Overview[edit]

New Schooler was created in late September of 2018 and they started their YouTube channel in May 2021. One of the members, Kamburi decided on the name "New Schooler" because he wanted to strive for a new genre of performance style in collegiate a capella groups, and was inspired by term "new school" in hip hop culture, a connotation of being innovative for their times[2].

Initially, Kamburi and Kawamu were planning on forming a tag team together, but somehow Chinen ended up joining them and they became a three man team. The three later thought it would be interesting to add an element of a capella to their beatbox team and thus asked Bayashi and Shimoren to join as the bass and vocals.

Awards and Achievements[edit]

In 2018, New Schooler won A Capella Spirits Newcomers Competition 2nd East Japan block, and was runner-up in the national event.

In 2019, New Schooler was second place in A Capella Spirits Sophomore year block.

In 2020, the group hit a record 700,000 views on their A Capella Spirits Junior year block video entry. However, due to the COVID pandemic, they decided to withdraw from the competition.

In 2021, New Schooler won third place in the 2021 Grand Beatbox Battle Crew Wildcard competition [1]. Although none of the members had ever been on the international stage of beatboxing before, they were well received by the judges and received a high placement in the Wildcard competition. New Schooler also had their first million views for their beatbox music video cover of Odo by Ado with Okanoya Tomoka [3].
