New York Journal of Books (NYJB) is a free online book review journal established in 2009.[1][2] Founded by investment banker Ted Sturtz.[1] The book review journal has several people who write for it who have professional credentials.[3] New York Journal of Books generally does not accept submissions from self-publishing authors.[3]

Reviewers[edit]

Reviewers for New York Journal of Books have included National Book Award finalist, Beth Kephart;[4] author William Martin;[5] Pulitzer-winning journalist and author William Dietrich;[6] romance novelist Eloisa James; Aphrodite Jones,[7] historical fiction writer Dora Levy Mossanen,[8] former Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs and Distinguished Fellow at the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs Tara Sonenshine,[9] Sam Millar;[10] and Jon Land; and others.[11] According to The New Yorker, book reviewer Joseph Mackin explained the motivation for writing a review, saying it was akin to publicizing the existence of a written work, and without reviews, the planet would be unaware, "The publication of a book is like the proverbial silent tree falling in the forest...and the reviewer's job is to tell the world."[12] The New Yorker relied upon Mackin's viewpoint, stressing the need for professional reviewers of books.[12]

Reception[edit]

Publishers Weekly noted the journal was "attempting to fill the gap left by the newspaper book review sections that have folded in recent years."[1] Publishers Weekly wrote of the journal's content, "The New York Journal of Books posts long-form reviews, meant for consumers, of just-published books."[1] Publishers Weekly observed, "Many of NYJB's 130-plus reviewers are published authors."[1] In a case study about the journal for Sagetree, Rich Yumul wrote, "The New York Journal of Books is the leading website for free, online-only, original book reviews."[2] He pointed out, "NYJB’s reviewer panel includes bestselling and Pulitzer, National Book Award and various other prestigious award-nominated and winning authors, journalists, experienced publishing executives, tenured academics, as well as vastly experienced professionals across a number of disciplines and industries."[2] Yumul commented, "With this highly credentialed and experienced group, NYJB preserves the tradition of excellence in book critique."[2] Writing Children's Books for Dummies wrote, "Online reviews such as New York Journal of Books .. play a big role for book consumers, as do respected bloggers who focus on children's book reviews. The more respected a venue or blog, the more influence it has on buying choices."[13]
