From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

NewsPicks is a mobile-first, business news aggregation and commentary platform that also produces its own original content. The business was founded in Japan in 2013 as one of the country’s first business media platforms to be optimized for mobile. At its core, NewsPicks is a social platform that enables users to discover, share, and comment on business news. In Japan, the service has 3,140,000 register users and 64,336 paying subscribers, with a price point of $15/month (as of 3/31/2018).[1][2][3][4]

NewsPicks expanded to the United States and launched US edition in 2017.[5][6]

The US edition app has been downloaded over 100,000 users only six months after launch.[7]

NewsPicks is a wholly-owned subsidiary of UZABASE (TYO: 3966), a business intelligence and media company, which went public in 2016 and is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.[1][2]

History[edit]

After finding success in the enterprise market with Uzabase, Yusuke Umeda launched NewsPicks as a second, consumer facing product in 2013. NewsPicks is a business news discovery and commentary platform--where users can see experts (industry executives, entrepreneurs, professors, etc.) comment on the most important news of the day. These experts, called ProPickers, are the leaders of the community.[8][9]

NewsPicks is one of the few new media services that has succeeded in creating a fast growing, paid subscription service.[1] The key driver for converting users into paying subscribers was the investment in a formidable newsroom, which writes and produces long form, deep dive stories into trends, companies, or individuals. This premium aggregation and original content, combined with the high quality community, is what separates NewsPicks from other news and social media products.[10][1] In April 2016, NewsPicks launched a new editorial team, focused on deeply analytical, long form, business news. The goal of this group is to offer quality articles written to fit the lifestyle of young urban professionals people in their 20s and 30s.[1]

In May 2017, NewsPicks established NewsPicks USA, in partnership with Dow Jones & Company to launch the service in the US market.[11] In Dec 2017, NewsPicks released the app in the US with the first batch of ProPickers, including: Arianna Huffington, founder and CEO of Thrive Global, Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, and Ian Bremmer, President of the Eurasia Group. The product has taken off and NewsPicks USA announced that they surpassed 100,000 users only six months after launch.[5][7]
