Ngāti Tukorehe is one of the many Māori iwi (tribe) based in the North Island of New Zealand. It has a tribal area covering parts of the Horowhenua District. Though it is often referred to as being a part of Ngāti Raukawa and the combination of hapū under Raukawa ki te Tonga, Ngāti Tukorehe is still rightly an iwi. It is made up of four hapū, which are Te Rangitāwhia, Te Mateawa, Ngāti Manu, Ngāti Kapumanawawhiti. The Ngāti Tukorehe area of interest extends from the sea to the mountains between the Waikawa and Ōhau river systems and their tributaries:
- Te Hākari wetlands and associated dune lakes
- Coastal estuaries
- Remaining native and exotic forests[1]
Te Iwi o Ngāti Tukorehe (The Tribe of Ngāti Tukorehe)[edit]
Te Iwi o Ngāti Tukorehe Ngāti Tukorehe is an iwi affiliated with Tainui waka (canoe). Originally from the Waikato region, sections of Ngāti Tukorehe and its hapū Te Mateawa, Te Rangitāwhia, Ngāti Kapu and Ngāti Manu migrated to Horowhenua and Manawatū regions in the early 1820s. Some members have whakapapa (lineage) that connects them to Māori rangatira (leaders, chiefs) such as Hoturoa, Raukawa, Rereahu, Maniapoto, Mahuta and many more.[2]
While Ngāti Tukorehe and its hapū are connected and politically supportive of Ngāti Raukawa, under whakapapa and tikanga Māori Ngāti Tukorehe has always asserted an independent iwi status.
